People often wonder how I keep up with my green ideals and with trying to live simply. The idea of going out of my way to toss a CFL into my e-waste box or tearing out my front lawn because of a water shortage may seem inconceivable to some. For me, each small step is hopefully creating a bigger action. In my efforts to reduce waste, shop secondhand and refuse plastic it all has a root cause. The root cause, obviously being this precious planet.

It’s hard to realize just how important it is to conserve resources when we live in a country that constantly consumes, creates and tosses away. The impact we have on this environment and how it affects us is often overlooked. The notion of having a lighter footstep is sometimes just that a “notion” rather than an action. How do we continue to share the beauty of nature for generations to come? I certainly want to my boys to show their children the light through the trees as I tried to capture above. The thought that they could even be the same ones is amazing to think about! Through conservation we can continue to enjoy and explore the many benefits nature has to offer…

Wikipedia definition

The conservation movement also known as nature conservation is a political and social movement that seeks to protect natural resources including plant and animal species as well as their habitat for the future.

The main point here is when we consume less and conserve resources- pursuing to save the planet doesn’t seem like a large feat. As I always say, time and time again! Every effort counts and we can all make a difference!! Don’t get me wrong, I’m definitely guilty of spending needlessly and purchasing disposable products out of pure convenience. I often think about what this world would be like if recycling was mandatory and if each one of us lived with the same motto… “No one can do everything. Everyone can do something“.

A zero waste world comes to mind. Dreamy, if you ask me! Conservation is a vital component in keeping our natural resources protected and limited. Remember, start small and go from there. Don’t try to do it all at once and overwhelm yourself. Pick one or two things you’re comfortable incorporating into your routine and go from there. Whether you cut back on purchases, electricity, watering your lawn, using disposable products, purchasing recycled products, thrift shop etc. you’re doing your part to conserve!

Lately, we’ve been doing a lot of talking about taking out our front lawn and attempting to collect rain water this winter. Every year we try to introduce news ways to live sustainably and limit household waste. Almost always you can catch me flicking off light switches, unplugging appliances when not in use, running a load of laundry using COLD water during off peak hours, turning the dryer off before it ends because half the time the laundry is dry or taking clothes off the line, and eating sustainably. Whenever possible I lean toward purchases/companies who are putting their profits to work by helping to protect our environment & wildlife.

UPDATE: Check out this article dated today in the NY Times titled ” Groups Seek Billions in Climate Bill for Resource Adaptation”

What about you? What do you do to conserve our natural resources?

Thanks for stopping by!
