**Attention: GREEN MOM’S CARNIVAL at end of this post!
Ever wonder where the title Recycle Your Day came from? To make a long story short, in my opinion, recycling is one of the easiest forms to contribute in helping to save the planet and within our day we do what’s necessary to improve the planet from recycling to wearing your jeans over and over again. It all happens within our day and starts all over again the next. So, there you have it; the root of my reasoning in a nut shell.
Tomorrow is America Recycles Day. Do you have any plans to celebrate? Last year our local bowling alley had a recycling drive but this year it seems to be quiet. Nothing has been coordinated and of course by the time I checked in it was too late to plan anything. I don’t think I’m going to let this happen again next year. November 15th is actually a pretty significant day for me- not only is it America Recycle’s Day, but it’s also my parent’s 34th anniversary and my sister’s 33rd birthday too!
Lot’s of fun ahead. Recycling is fun! It is! I swear! Okay, I’m exaggerating a little (leetle) bit. It’s easy to make it part of your everyday life without it being a “hassle” or “inconvenient” though. There’s a method to the recycling madness but at the end of the day it’s not about the entertainment value it’s about the reward! Recycling is a rewarding act in so many ways. Doing your part to recycle also shows your appreciation for natural resources and broadens your perspective on the value of re purposing old items into new.
Since I did not get the opportunity to host an America Recycles event- I came up with this crazy cool idea to post an add on Freecycle for used scratched CD’s. A couple weeks ago, I realized we had a few CD’s that were scratched and could no longer be used. I wasn’t about to just toss it into my waste bin so I thought about how I could upcycle them. I’ve seen them used for garden ornaments to scare off birds and I think I’ve even seen a tutorial for Christmas ornaments. The more I thought about it, the more curious I became (still working on ideas).
My curiousity, lead me to Google. Years ago, when I looked for information on CD recycling I couldn’t find anything. Now, there’s a company in California & New Hampshire collecting CD’s for recycling. Then I came up with the idea that it can’t hurt to ask for unwanted CD’s through Freecycle in honor of America Recycles Day. Besides; I already have a box of shoes and cellphones that need to be mailed out for recycling anyway so it’ll be kind of like killing two birds with one stone.
Bottom line, recycling should be an important part of our daily lives. As consumer’s we need to be aware the output we create and minimize wherever possible. This is where the fun part comes in… because you’ll have “trash” that you won’t want to get rid of you will start coming up with ideas and ways to re purpose it! Recycling not only encourages you but also challenges you to get clever with waste and bring out your inner creative self. We all gain from the experience right down to that piece of tin foil you tossed into your recyclables!
I’m pretty adamant about recycling in this household and am always finding new oddities that can be recycled. You know, the ones that you don’t normally see on the top 10 or 21 list of things to recycle.
Such as-
- lottery tickets
- scotch tape dispenser
- candy foil (think we may start an aluminum foil ball like they did at Pee-Wee’s Playhouse -LOL!
- disposable contact lense cups
- to-go cup tops, cups, sauce cups/lids
- eyeglasses
these are just a few off the top of my head but the main rule of thumb is to always check for a recycle symbol. Granted some things can be recycled that do not carry the symbol. Which is where the non profit organizations come in and find useful ways to re purpose items such as CD’s, eyeglasses, hair, etc.
It’s so amazing and gratifying to me how much waste CAN go into the recyclables- our trash isn’t even full on trash days.
Okay, I’m stepping away from my soapbox! I’ll leave with a fun song!!!
Have a great weekend!
This post is for the Green Moms Carnival. This month the topic is Recycling. I’m hosting for the first time so be sure to come back and check out what other women from the Green Mom’s Carnival are saying!

Hi All! Please excuse this short & sweet carnival post! The stomach bug has bit our home and he isn’t very friendly! No fevers just a sore and sour stomach! I juiced carrot, apple, and ginger hoping to find some relief and hydration. Will be heading out for coconut water STAT!
So, I don’t mean to put a damper on my FIRST carnival- hope you’ll bear with me!
Happy America Recycles Day!!!

Hi Leslie,
Wow! You’re off to a great start. Can’t wait to see the carnival post tomorrow!
It’s incredible to me that you have to mail out items to be recycled. I am fortunate to live in a county with an extremely sophisticated recycling system, but it’s a good reminder that most of the country does not operate at all that way – which is one reason why the battle for more sustainable product design and increased recycling, decreased use of plastic is so important!

Leslie,
I have used old CDs to scare off crows but they laughed at me. I should have used the ones that are shiny on both sides…
I have been collecting old CDs and DVDs and their plastic cases for awhile via GreenDisk. I have to pay for the shipping but it is has kept them out of landfills!
