A few years ago I worked at a bar named Maxdon’s in town and would always take the Balvenie Whiskey canisters home to store my quarters in that were part of my tips. About every 3 months it would be full and I’d rake in $250!! A friend of mine currently works there and scored one for me recently. I had an idea in mind for months and finally had the opportunity to follow through!
The idea was to decoupage the outside so that I could turn it into a piggy bank for my son. I’m fine with the piggy my husband and I use- that reads THE BALVENIE but not for my child. So, the other day I cut away using old magazines. I finally had my pile that I thought would make a perfect collage and started to glue them one. I’ve always wanted to decoupage-this was my first attempt. It took a long time but probably because I was a beginner. I had fun cutting and pasting it was actually pretty relaxing.
My son had fun pointing out pictures he wanted to appear on his new piggy bank. He’s already filled up the lil piggy bank we bought for him awhile back at Giggle.com that is non toxic and phthalate free! That’s what really put the fire under me to do it because we had no where to put the change my husband brings home everyday. Alas, all the pictures were glued and below is the end result. I didn’t quite get to the very top edge like I wanted to- I accidentally cut the paper to short…but I’m planning to fill it in. The only thing that’s really missing is the slit on the tin top- which I’ll let my husband take care of! For now, we just take the lid off and my son puts his change in there.
These Balvenie canisters are actually recyclable. Their made of paper and the bottom and top of the canister is tin. Which is pretty cool when you think about it!
I really like the way it turned out and it took me all of a couple hours to do. I was impressed. A repurposed masterpiece!

What have you re-purposed lately? Have you decoupaged before??

Creative repurposing is one of my favorite methods of greening the household. This piggy bank turned out beautifully! My son is obsessed with Thomas and would think probably rip it out of your little fellow’s hands the moment he saw it–which just goes to show that sometimes homemade stuff is much better than anything you can purchase! Thanks so much for joining us this week for Thrifty Green Thursday!

That did turn out really well! I haven’t tried decoupaging myself, but it seems like the perfect way to repurpose something, as you’ve demonstrated. Good idea!
Thanks for your TGT contribution!
