Ditch the Bottled Water Habit!

This is my second attempt at this post. Don’t ya hate it when that happens!!!! I’m not even sure how it happened…but all I have to say is don’t fall asleep at the keyboard. I hate loosing an ENTIRE post. Anyway, that’s not what I wanted to tell you write about.

Have you ditched the bottled water habit?

It’s been 2 years since we’ve purchase bottled water. We’ve definitely noticed a savings in our grocery bill. I’m a firm believer of getting in my 8-10 glasses a day, therefore I do drink a lot of water. We invested in Klean Kanteen’s last year. Prior to that we’d been using Migo water bottles we’d purchased in a 3 pack at Costco . The buzz about BPA had just hit and we’d been trying to cut back on our plastic consumption so we figured it was the right time to make the switch from plastic to stainless. Either way both are reusable and allow for a lifetime of sips.

Quick Plastic Fact!

Each year it takes 47 million gallons of oil to produce H2O bottles, creating 1.5 million tons of plastic waste14 plastic bags contain enough petrochemicals to fuel your car for one mile!

In terms of thinking about how much plastic waste there is and the fact that it’s plagueing our oceans; for me, personally, stainless the better option. Granted, there are some BPA free plastic re-usable water bottle companies but as an eco crusader I believe it is my duty to make the best decision for Mother Earth. Plastic lives forever! I don’t want to sound hardcore or like a snob but it’s really the underlying issue here. All we can do is our part.  I can say that I’m not as super eco as Captian Moore because if I was I’d have a corks for all the lids rather than plastic ones. You can also take it even further and get yourself a reusable straw.

Purchasing a reusable water bottle is worth the investment. It allows you to keep filling up without the added cost of purchasing a case of water each time you shop. It also pays for itself in no time.  Don’t like the idea of tap water? Don’t worry because Brita has filtered water pitchers and they recycle their filters too! Or you can liven’ up your water like I do most of the time…

*  Add a squeeze of lemon, lime or orange juice (I’m pretty vigilant about this!)

*  Add in a some fruit juice

*  Make a pitcher with fresh fruits, cucumbers, fresh mint, or lavender.

*  Make herbal sun tea- I like Celestial Seasonings.

* If you like you’re water bubbly or with gas (as they say in Europe) then add a bit of Club Soda

What I like best about the Klean Kanteen is that they do not leach or retain any flavors. Which means I can juice and blend away; make a smoothie and pour it in! My son loves his Foogo and he also loves a smoothie in his reusable water bottle. He had a stainless steel sippy by Foogo but never did take to it. He’s been a straw kinda guy ever since.

UPDATE: PLEASE FORGIVE ME- BUT UNFORTUNATELY THE SLURPEE STRAWS HAVE BEEN TESTED BY @thesmartmama HERSELF USING HER XRF – THE STRAWS ARE ALUMINUM ALLOY!!! I APOLOGIZE FOR THE MISINFORMATION.  THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING.

So, folks, hop on the reusable water bottle wagon and start saving both money and the planet.  It’s definitely a win-win!!

We love our klean kanteens at our house. We have Siggs too, but I prefer the KK. The kids have Siggs and KK, but prefer the Foogo straw cup. I am going to have to fins some of those straws. Awesome.

[...] drinking soda so it eliminated much of our aluminum waste. Not to mention, since we’ve kicked the water bottle habit we rarely have a water bottle. Overall, the waste baskets hardly get used in that manner anymore. [...]
