Hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday! We took off last Tuesday evening for Trinity. We stayed with our friends who own the Bonanza King Resort and also with family who drove in from Washington. We had a great time. I apologize for neglecting things here. I’m still in the process of a makeover and many other things. Time has been such an issue! I hate to sound like a broken record- I know I’ve been telling you this now for over a month.

Thank you for being patient with me while I take on one thing at a time. The holiday rush is already here and I’m excited about Baby C’s first Christmas…and the spirit of! I’m looking forward to this holiday season. We wanted to stop for a Christmas tree on our way down from Coffee Creek and didn’t get that opportunity because we were exhausted and wanted to get home.  9 hours in a car can drive you a little batty! We made it though and it’s good to be back.

After singing Old McDonald a million times and pointing out the California farmland and animals, discussing our trip and other distractions we survived. It was a LONG drive though! Baby C was asleep for most of it and did get unhappy along the way but we didn’t have to make as many stops as we had thought. We experienced our first 14oo mile round trip with Baby C and I’d say he’s our little traveling man just like T!

I attempted to take a ton of pics but still forget to take some important ones. O’well. That’s life in the mama lane!

Oh! and please don’t hate me but I’m going to extend t he Retro Razor contest till Dec 14th! :)

I’ll post pictures separately- promise!

Be sure to stay tuned for an upcoming interview with an awesome eco entrepreneur that you’ll be amazed by!

America Recycles Day

**Attention: GREEN MOM’S CARNIVAL at end of this post!

Ever wonder where the title Recycle Your Day came from? To make a long story short, in my opinion, recycling is one of the easiest forms to contribute in helping to save the planet and within our day we do what’s necessary to improve the planet from recycling to wearing your jeans over and over again. It all happens within our day and starts all over again the next. So, there you have it; the root of my reasoning in a nut shell.

Tomorrow is America Recycles Day. Do you have any plans to celebrate? Last year our local bowling alley had a recycling drive but this year it seems to be quiet. Nothing has been coordinated and of course by the time I checked in it was too late to plan anything. I don’t think I’m going to let this happen again next year. November 15th is actually a pretty significant day for me- not only is it America Recycle’s Day, but  it’s also my parent’s 34th anniversary and my sister’s 33rd birthday too!

{the upcycled & recycled} TerraCycle: Outsmart Waste!

November 13, 2009 by La Mama Naturale'

Happy Friday the 13th! Welcome to another edition of {the upcycled & recycled}!

This week I’m featuring an awesome company that does wonderful things with waste!

When I first heard about TerraCycle I was very intrigued by what they were doing and thought finally. Finally, someone is thinking! I have a real problem with the litter companies create that isn’t sustainable in any way shape or form. This is why our  landfills are reaching their limits because we have trash that won’t break down and decompose  and we have companies who continually ignore the fact our planet is in peril. Argh! It’s soooo maddening and vicious!

Founded in 2001 by a 19 year old Princeton University freshman named Tom Szaky, TerraCycle started as an organic fertilizer company and has grown into a multi-category, eco-friendly powerhouse. Tom’s dream was to find way a new, more responsible way of doing doing business that would be good for the planet, good for people and good for the bottom line!

TerraCycle upcycles waste from soda bottles, drink pouches, yogurt and chip bags into school supplies, garden products , pet products, bath products and green cleaners

Become a terracycler and start saving the chip bags, drink pouches, yogurt cups, etc. and send them to a participating school!

What waste are you upcycling in your home?

Psst! Be sure to check out yesterday’s post! (Permalink was broken so it would not “continue reading…”)

Hello there! Me again. Changes are in progress here at RYD and I’m really excited. Soon you will be too!

Going green is on the brain 24/7!  Since it’s always on the brain and I always have ideas swirling around…

I’m going to start sharing tibits of juicy information with you all in one post. This helps alleviate some of my anxiety on trying to bring you rockin’ green news on the daily! So, I’ve started a new series here at RYD called {tibits of green}! Lots of tidbits here and there and everywhere to bring you weekly.

I haven’t decided if I want to do this on Thursday’s on Wednesday’s with Wordless Wednesday. I will also be starting a Mr. Linky here as well for WW and Meatless Monday’s. This way other’s can participate too.  I may even start a forum…but one thing at time my pretties!

Without further ado…

Our trip to the Ananda Marga Organic Peach Farm

November 10, 2009 by La Mama Naturale'

On Sunday, the hub Baby C and I drove out to the Ananda Marga Organic Farm in Lake Hughes, Ca. Which is not a far drive from our home whatsoever! The Ananda Marga Organic Farm was part of our local farmer’s market. Last weekend was the final market until next June.

I really liked the opportunity of having fresh locally grown produce at my disposal on Saturday mornings. This was the first year our town did anything like this and I thought it was successful. It was nice chatting with the farmer’s and their wives and getting to know the person who is growing the very food on your plate. It’s actually quite interesting to have a conversation with some of farmers. Especially, the ones who are growing their produce organically.

I’m sad the market was over but happy  I was able to meet and greet the local farmers each Saturday! After doing my normal chitchatting I found out the Ananda Marga Farm is open year round to visitors. I had no idea! Finding this out made my entire year. I’ve known about the farm for quite some time but did not know you could buy produce from them directly. I thought you had to be part of the CSA.

Which was definitely one of our goals this year- to get on board with Community Supported Agriculture through Abundant Harvest Organics. I’m still working on it though and visiting the Ananda Marga Farm has given me some inspiration to get something started ASAP. I haven’t really found anyone receptive enough to take on half of the load with us- but still working to find others interested in sharing a box. Keep your fingers crossed for us because it’s the next best thing to growing your own!

Meatless Monday: a meal for breakfast & dinner

quinoa

Hi there! Happy Meatless Monday!
Today, I’m cooking up soup in the crockpot! We visited our local farm yesterday and bought some fresh red chard and other veggies and fruit. Last night,  I decided I was going to make a soup I put together at the beginning of summer when the red chard was at the peak of it’s season.  We also bought some canned pesto and chuncky peach jam from the organic farm. Mmm! I am uploading the footage I took of the farm as I type but may not get to post it as I’m rushing to get this published before the eco tot wakes up!!

Over the weekend, I dehydrated some sprouted quinoa to make a raw version of coco pops cereal. You might be asking what in the world quinoa is… ?

{Simple & Green} Make Your Own: 3-Way Body Oil for Dry Skin

bodyoil

As the winter months approach the air is getting drier AND if you add heat and living in the desert to everything well the elements become VERY DRY! Case in point, my skin needs nourishing. Most of the conventional products on the market are actually quite drying and filled with nasty chemicals. In trying to keep my toxic exposure low I like to make my own oils, lotions, and potions!

Besides, it’s cheaper & cleaner to put together my own concoction than to spend loads of money on products that are only doing the opposite of what you want them to do! Plus, when I make my own I know exactly what’ s in it and I like having  peace of mind. I don’t like trying to read ingredients I can’t pronounce or sound way to involved for me it’s a chemical alert!

Recently, I put together a body oil that consists of  extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil and cocoa butter. I suppose you could add an essential oil- but it smells pretty yummy the way it is. I use olive oil because it’s high in vitamin E and antioxidants. You can use evoo plain but I like the creamy effect you get when  you mix the cocoa butter in. It also feels like it glides farther and covers more distance than when you use EVOO plain. Besides, cocoa butter and coconut oil are also great for the skin.

Ever heard of eco-artware.com? Me neither. Not until I stumbled upon their unique online shop the other day then realized I’d been following them on twitter for some time  LOL!  :)

eco-artware carries gifts that have been recycled, reused or made with natural materials. A perfect feature for the {upcycled and recycled} series this week. I say, get an early start this year and take advantage of stay at home shopping.
