At the start of summer I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Nathan Winters. I was really intrigued when I found out he was going to trek across the country on his bicycle in the name of Mother Nature. He started his  journey in May of this year, all while giving back and pursuing his dream to bike across the country. Yesterday he met his goal and arrived at his final destination. His twitter page noted that once he reached Bellingham, WA. he was going to  “dip my tire in the water” and also noted it was cloudy the same day he started.  Be sure to stay tuned…  a book will soon be in the works!

Three cheers for crossing the finish line & going the distance.  What a feat!

If you want to support Nathan and congratulate him it’s not too late!  :)

Food Inc.

Our chickens are starting to molt – which means they’re starting to loose their feathers- I need to snap a picture of them for ya! It’s not really a pretty sight but usually a sign that egg production will be coming to an end for awhile. Oh no! That means we’ll have to buy eggs from the supermarket…lol!

Unless, we can find some fresh eggs elsewhere. Our coop fence broke a few weeks ago so the chickens have been free ranging a whole lot. It’s good and bad. Lot’s of extra fertilizer- is all I can say. They seemed to have made friends with our dogs and vice versa because they’ve been hanging out in the shade together -usually napping!

Here’s a clip on the recent film Food Inc. – a controversial film on the way food is produced – I really want to see it!

Hope you all had a fantastic weekend. Mine flew by! After enjoying a weekend of fresh organic foods some harvested from our garden + MIL and farmer’s market… I’d been thinking a lot about how important it is for our food to be fresh and pure.

It’s unbelievable how many packaged foods on the market there are that are considered nutritious because they’re fortified with vitamins. Then there’s  the new Smart Choice labels that seem to be stamped on it seems like every box in the supermarket telling you how healthy it is to eat. Like Fruit Loops, cereal-  I’m sorry but anything packaged is going to contain preservatives and not to mention most are either high sugar or high in salt! It’s getting ridiculous. The more and more we get away from wholesome natural foods the more we go into the direction of fake, plastic, unreal- genetically modified foods!!! It’s pretty scary.

No fat pigs bought here!!! Instead some farmer’s market seasonal produce!

Yum! I’m going to miss the farmer’s market when they’re gone! October is the last month. :( Boo-hoo!

Although, the organic farm in Lake Elizabeth (the nearby mtn. town) is is open year-round. Which is nice to know. I love going every Saturday and buying up fresh produce from farmers who are local. They’ve even had Zinnia’s, Calendula, & Sunflower’s to buy! Love it. I think I’m going to take my camera next time I go and snap a few photo’s of the farmer’s market freshness.  I always take my Inconvenience  Bag with me- I love that’s it’s canvas (perfect for fruits & veggies) and love their message (they have some pretty awesome designs too!). While at the farmer’s market they tried to give me plastic today but I wasn’t having it. REFUSAL successful.

About a month ago, our Costco collection of toothbrushes came to an end! While on a quick run into Trader Joe’s I saw these Preserve toothbrushes and decided to purchase them. I’d read a lot about them previously and figured it was the best eco option. We’ve been using them for a couple weeks now and like them.

I love all the features about Preserve products! I honestly can’t believe I haven’t invested in their products sooner. I’m thrilled to share the wonderful information with you.

Coastal Cleanup Day

A friendly reminder that you have one more day to register and be part of the action!

September 19th, 2009 is the

24th annual International Coastal Cleanup Day

“Last year’s Cleanup, nearly 400,000 volunteers collected more than 6.8 million pounds of trash in 100 countries and 42 US states — the largest volunteer effort of its kind.

The Cleanup is crucial in determining  the impact ocean trash has on wildlife and how it correlates with global warming. Each year the report is compelling:

Of the 43 items tracked during the Cleanup, the top three items of trash found in 2008 were cigarette butts, plastic bags, and food wrappers/containers.

Get out there if you can this year and help. Be part of the largest volunteer effort…

There is a possibility that we may be attending the event in Ventura…but it’s not set in stone. If you can’t get involved this year, remember that it falls on the 3rd Saturday of each September!!

Will definitely keep you posted.  Have a great weekend!  :)

Will YOU be volunteering to cleanup?

Happy WW~ One of my favorite shots this summer!
