Something for fun…

August 21, 2008

Yesterday, the hubs and I celebrated our 3 yr. anniversary!

Happy Anniversary Babe!

Since I’m still feeling yuck…we didn’t do anything special.

Just reminded each other how much our love grows.

Especially, with a little bun in the oven.

Oh! and I checked the Chinese calender over at Mothering Mag online- and I’m supposed to be having a boy!

It was right the last time…..

Another boy would be neat- plus, we have all the gear ready to go! :) Huge savings for us..but a GIRL would be fabulous too! :)

Had to do something fun…

M.I.A with Morning Sickness! Bleah.

August 14, 2008

Hi all,

I don’t want you to think that I deserted you…I’m just ill! Unfortunately, my system cannot take all the hormone action it’s creating to make this baby, therefore I’m puking machine. My last pregnancy, I was so darn sick I lost 30lbs. the first trimester. I did gain it all back but now I’m thinner than I was when I was pre- preggo with Tristan- so that make’s me a bit more concerned. It’s day and night- forgot the in the morning’s- it’s all day!!! Taking care of a little one doesn’t make it any easier. Oh! MY! For now, I’m coping  but I honestly, don’t have the motivation to write posts and the lack of environmental thoughts doesn’t help either. I’m doing my best to keep up with a regime and do everything I’m supposed to. I’m hoping this will not last as long and I’ll be back on my toes tomorrow…LOL! Or how about, as soon as humanly possible. Yeah, I like that one better!! :) Okay, well, that’s all I can come up with for now…

I’ll leave you with a Green Fact from the Green Book:

Farmer’s Market vs. Supermarket

Try doing some of your shopping at a local farmer’s market. And if you can, walk or bike there. Of the total energy used in the United States per year, 4 percent is used to produce food, and between 10 and 13 percent is used to transport it. On averge, U.S. supermarket food travels 1,500 to 2,500 miles before it reaches the family table. Buying local food can reduce the amount of petroleum consumed to transport your dinner by as much as 95 percent!

Why I don’t feel good…

August 10, 2008

So, this morning I woke up feeling a little queasy…and I thought to myself- “cramps”. Then, as the morning went on I started to gag and feel as though I needed to puke. Well, all these symptoms made me re-think the monthy cycle was about to begin. My husband I both looked at each other…and we knew….

He ran to CVS and came back with an EPT test- and sure enough- I’M PREGNANT!!!! We normally get pregnancy tests from my sister who works for an OBGYN and can supply as many as I need but she was teaching a Lamaze class and we didn’t want to disturb her nor did we want to wait!!! Plus, yesterday and the day before I had mentioned to my hubs that I was feeling pregnant and that I was having a lot of flashbacks…well, guess your instincts are never wrong!!!

I contacted the Midwife, Aleks (Aleksandra) and left a message for an appt. ASAP~  She and Connie (other midwife) practice out of Santa Monica and at the moment they’re trying to open a birthing center. I’m okay with the idea of giving birth in a center but I’m pushing for HOME, BABY! I’ve been eating Goji berries hoping to quell the queasies. Guess, it’s time to stock up on all the nutritional items for pregnancy. Went out and bought Red Raspberry Leaf tea…love this stuff…helps tone the uterus. Luckily, I have pre-natals and Floradix…but I’m gonna need some protein sources. Since we’ve been back we’ve only shopped minimally- tomorrow- we’re stocking up!

Some of you may be thinking it’s probably way too early to announce the news… well, I understand WHY…but I just couldn’t contain myself. And- it doesn’t hurt to get a little support from all of you!! ; )

Part of me is thrilled! The other part is thinking Holy Batwomen…it’s about to CRAZY UP IN HERE!! : )

Recycling Facts You Should Know About

August 9, 2008

Why recycle you ask? The benefits of recycling have a tremendous impact on the planet. Why do we care about the planet?  The future of your children and their children are depending on it! With the way the economy has been lately, more and more people have started to recycle. It can be a great way to earn a little extra cash but the economy will eventually get better (hopefully). We as American’s need to continue to recycle not just for monetary reasons but for environmental reasons also. As American’s we produce a lot of waste. We’re the leaders in having a GIANT carbon footprint. It’s outrageous. They’re are plenty of reasons to recycle- know the facts first, then start with the basics and let your recycling imagination take over. Once you learn about all the recyclable’s you can start to manage them and dispose of them properly. Many people think recycling is time consuming. It’s really just another step added into your day- like anything else, once you incorporate it into your daily routine it becomes part of your life. Recycling should be mandatory, especially in places where landfills are at their maximum. I just heard the other day somewhere that Oregonian’s recycle 50% of their waste - good for them! I live in California, and would love to say we’re recycling fools…and top the 50% number…!! Someday maybe.

Every little bit counts- which is why I’m encouraging you to start recycling and making a difference. If you don’t already have a recycling bin provided by your local trash company (not sure how it works in each state) look into getting one.  Here in Ca., Waste Management provides us with a bin strictly for recycling. I can’t even begin to tell you how much of what we would’ve considered normal trash goes into the recycling bin- it’s amazing! There isn’t a need for us to put our trash can out every week either. It doesn’t fill up as fast when you’re monitoring what’s trash and what’s recyclable. You’ll soon see that your recycling waste will become the majority of regular trash that was normally being thrown away! On top of that, if you’re composting a lot of your kitchen scraps that would eventually turn into methane gas in landfills (major contributor of Global Warming) become nourishment for your garden or worms if you’re vermicomposting- We’re doing both!  One is mainly for food scraps and the other is for lawn and paper- “woody” waste. You can get tips on how to compost here- http://www.composting101.com/composting-tips.html

For now, remember that when you’re recycling you’re cutting back on the amount of waste that would otherwise enter a landfill. The majority of items in a landfill are recyclables…I witnessed this recently, when I took a trip to our local dump! We need to be more eco-conscious of the waste we’re creating and stop the potential toxic chemicals that could enter the Earth. I try my hardest to buy things that are unpackaged and try not to buy plastic or take it from retailers/grocer’s whenever possible. Purchasing less packaged items, especially individually packaged items- means less waste.  When I do buy packaged, I purchase items that are favorable to recycle such as glass. Plastic = Chemicals, no good! Unless, it’s BPA free but even then…opt for a more sustainable option. Plus, a lot of the plastic used for packaging does not have a redemption value which means most recycling centers will not take them- but luckily, some do! Which is why it’s important to have the recycling bin through Waste Management or other trash company in your area because all numbers are accepted! There’s no worry.

What should you be recycling and keeping out of landfills!
Any and all…
E-Waste- Batteries, Cell Phones, Computers- E- Waste is a biggie because these items are highly toxic! Car batteries, motor oil and paint too!
Paper, Plastic, Glass, Aluminum, Steel, and Copper

When you think about paper it’s not just the newspaper it’s all the junk mail, phone books, magazines, receipts, toilet paper and paper towel rolls, cardboard boxes, note paper- etc. A great thing to know, too, is that you don’t have to worry about scraping out the peanut butter jar or mayo, just toss right into the recycling bin! Be sure that you keep these separate from your paper items because you don’t want to contaminate a load. I learned this when I did an article for local paper in town about recycling and contacted Waste Management. One big reason why pizza boxes aren’t allowed in the bin. Paper products cannot be recycled when they’ve come into contact with moisture. Remember, deodorant and chopstick containers can be recycled too-and as for razors- Green Daily recently posted on 5 ways to recycle them!! Don’t forget to add aluminum foil or aluminum take out trays to your crate of cans. Soup cans or any canned item can be added to your curbside recycle bin too! Otherwise, find a recycling center near you that accepts it.

Check out these facts and remember to RECYCLE. IT’S RAD!

 - Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours - or the equivalent of a half a gallon of gasoline.
-  An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now!
-  If every American recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we would save about 25,000,000 trees a year.
- The average American uses seven trees a year in paper, wood, and other products made from trees. This amounts to about 2,000,000,000 trees per year!
- Approximately 1 billion trees worth of paper are thrown away ever year in the U.S.
- Recycling plastic saves twice as much energy as burning it in an incinerator.
- A modern glass bottle would take 4000 years or more to decompose — and even longer if it’s in the landfill.
- Motor oil never wears out, it just gets dirty. Oil can be recycled, re-refined and used again, reducing our reliance on imported oil.
- About one-third of an average dump is made up of packaging material
- More than 20,000,000 Hershey’s Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of aluminum foil. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it.
- Every year, each American throws out about 1,200 pounds of organic garbage that can be composted.
- The US population discards each year 16,000,000,000 diapers, 1,600,000,000 pens, 2,000,000,000 razor blades, 220,000,000 car tires, and enough aluminum to rebuild the US commercial air    fleet four times over. On average, each one of us produces 4.4 pounds of solid waste each day. This adds up to almost a ton of trash per person, per year.

Eco Funtabulous Feature Friday~

The end of the week is here! Hooray, for Friday’s!! Finally, starting to feel like we’ve recovered from the trip… We truly miss northen California and feel so strongly about moving there! There’s so much more to offer and it’s a completely different world than SoCal. The people are different…life is different…it’s definitely greener on the other side!!! LOL! I miss being near the forest and taking in the ocean air. The best of both worlds. The Redwood trees aremagnificent beings that every time I see them I forgot how massive and enchanting they are. One night is was so clear while we camped along the 101 near Fortuna, Ca I looked up and saw EVERY star imaginable and the Milky Way. It was incredible. I didn’t want to stop looking up. Anyway, before I get lost…Northern California is into being green, healthy and happy. I love this. There’s something more to NorCal that makes the hubs and I feel a strongly about it. When we were leaving we both agreed that we felt like we were being pulled back- our energies were being magnitized. Okay, sounds weird…but it’s true!

As you all know, while I was out I featured guest posts and some fantastic interviews with eco companies! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. I want to express a big THANKS to all the blogs and eco companies who participated!!! A big big thanks. Will I be doing this in the future? U-BET. Getting to know other perspectives from different bloggers and learning about what eco companies are doing to protect our planet.

There are still a few things in the works at RYD- and I will keep you up to date as it progresses…. I leave it to your imagination for now! ; )

If you’ve been following me on Twitter- you’ll know that I burned myself…yep! Hot oil + thumb, index and middle = blister on thumb and index- Fortunately, it’s not too serious but my thumb looks really fugly and the blister on it looks like a growth of sorts, it’s purple and gross! The little blister on my index and my middle finger survived with the least damage. To point of my story is- thank goodness for medicinal Aloe in the bay window and Burt’s Bees Res-Q ointment. Both relieved the pain and kept the burn at bay. Since Burt’s Bees was taken over by Clorox- I’ve been hesitant to purchase their products. Burt’s Bees was one of the first all natural skin, body, and face product that I used for years and years. I love the Herbal Ointment too- it’s the best for bikini rash- use after you shave the bikini area - it works like a charm. Keeps the bumbs back and redness away!  I love it. It’s also great for sensitive skin conditions such as- Excema. Oh! and their herbal insect repellant is the best! It definitely keeps the mosquito’s away and it smells good too! It doesn’t smell like chemicals! I’m a huge fan of their products- I know they sold out to the big boys and I have my suspicions. They’re are plenty of all natural companies to choose from but Burt’s Bees still gets an A+ for performance on my end.

Well, it’s been a few days over a month since the Unplugged Challenge began. How are you doing? I gave up blow drying my hair and my bread machine. I’ve also cut back on using appliances and making sure unplug them when not in use. I haven’t missed my blow dryer much- it actually saves me tons of time in the morning because I don’t have to style my hair. I’ve noticed it’s a bit healthier and has more shine to it.  Speaking of which, I’ve been contemplating the “no-poo” idea and asked a question during the Sprig on Washington Post.com where they discussed Green Beauty and Living. The Green Girls also asked a question about eco friendly tanning options- check it out! The bread machine is looking very sad lately but I’ve been satisfied with other options like tortillas! I’m still motivated to continue being unplugged! How about you?

Our garden survived while we were gone and we’ve been enjoying the abdundance of produce we’re getting- zuchinni, eggplant, cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, chile peppers (3 varieties), and oinions. We’ve been making Ratatoullie like there’s no tomorrow over quinoa and also made a frittata with all the same ingredients and it’s GREAT having chickens. The eggs are delicious and I love getting the double yolkers!

It’s such a great feeling to know your food is coming from your own backyard. While we were up north the hubs and I drank smoothies that had blended oatmeal and almonds in them- either, or. Hubs had the strawberry and oats and I had the blackberries and almonds…delish!!! I tried it this morning with mixed berries and even added spinach and it was good.  A clever idea, I thought.

I’ve wanted to share this with you for awhile…I’ve been using the new eco friendly laundry soap they’re carrying exclusively at Costco called Wintree. I’m really digging it. My clothes smell really fresh (it’s Lavendar scented) and feel soft too! I’ve been happy with it so far. It’s super concentrated so that you can get the most out of it and it’s safe for the environment.  I love that Costco is going more and more green!!!

Oh! and before I forget- the blocks above are made by Uncle Goose - Tristan received them for his first birthday and loves to stack them up and knock them down - can you say boy? They’re so cute and colorful- wooden- and have numbers, letters, symbols, and animal prints on their sides. They have a waffle/cookie print design on one side of all the blocks. They’re pretty unique. They come in a knifty little sack to keep them in or you can get the cute pull wagon that costs extra. I know my son will get good use out of these blocks and they’re a great item to pass down.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend. It’s good to be back.

P.S. Hubs thinks we’re having a garage sale tomorrow…he’s been sorting out the garage since we’ve been back and has started a few piles- Freecycle, donate, and sale! Good  grief!!!

P.P.S.

Don’t forget to enter the giveaways for Eco Touch and Focoloco!!! Check them out below…

World Breastfeeding Week & Belly Fish

August 7, 2008

Inspired by World Breastfeeding Week- I wanted to share with you my breastfeeding adventures thus far… My son is 15 mos. now and he’s been breastfeeding since birth! It has been quite the journey and VERY challenging. I’d be lying if I told you it was easy. It’s easy once you get the hang of it and incorporate it into your lifestyle…but challenging when it is interupted by unexpected experiences such as overactive letdown, thrush, and teething to name a few. These are my personal experiences- after the 3rd day my son was born he began to choke at the breast and would not suckle at all. I became very worried and learned about overactive letdown and adjusted- except that I was leaky from all pumping  I mean squeezing (LOL!) and constantly wearing washable organic cotton pads in my handed down nursing bra’s that seemed like the silliest form of fashion ever. What an annoyance, especially when you’re in public and you’re fighting your way through your shirt then fiddle with the clasp and finally get your baby positioned after the pad as fallen on the floor somewhere! LOL!  Anyway, after the choking and my boobs getting back to their normal size…Tristan had thrush! The absolute worst thing ever.  A yeast infection in the mouth. Luckily, I did not contact thrush so my breasts were saved from all the pain…but my poor child endured approximately 3 months of discomfort. Boy, was it hard to continue nursing…for I feared an infection but I kept going…I was determined and it was not going to stop me from breastfeeding. We found out about Thrush when he was 18 days old and it did not clear until he was a little over 3 mos. I knew we could both get through it and we did. Teething seems to be an ongoing issue since Tristan broke his first tooth at 3 months! As of today he has 8 teeth and is getting in 3 molars!!! So, he’ been a little more needy than usual but it’s all for a reason, right!! He’s clamping on and rubbing those molars against my nipple lately, and it hurts! There’s just times that I feel like I’m fed up with nursing and other times I don’t want to loose the special bond. I always remind myself how fast time fly’s and he won’t be nursing before I know it! It will be then that I will be grateful for the time I spent with him while nursing. We go back and forth on the night weaning. He does well but as soon as a new tooth cuts he’s in need of extra TLC and it usually disrupts his sleeping pattern. Ugh. I know he’s enjoying it and feels comfort and is soothed- yes, he uses it as a pacifier but at least I have the control of taking it out of his mouth!!! Some people think that 15 mos. is way too long to nurse but in my opinion and from what I’ve read-breastfeeding / extended breastfeeding  offer plenty of benefits. Breastfeeding will always have a nutritional benefit. You hear the information that says there are no nutritional benefits past a year…but you also hear that nursing till 2 yrs. is the answer. I’m sorry, but you’re body doesn’t have any idea the age of the child so as far as I concerned, it will continue to produce nutritional benefits for your baby as long as you continue to nurse!  I think any child has an attachment whether it’s a favorite bear, blankie, toy, paci, song- whatever- in my son’s case it’s the breast! I just go with the flow-hahaha! No pun intended. I’m hoping that he’ll naturally wean himself when he’s ready to. As any child would from their favorite attachment item. I’ve tried different techniques to help with the night weaning and so far it’s worked out okay. It’s really all about what works best for you and your baby. I’d say he still nurses frequently, but then again, he’s teething so I should give him a break. We’re supplementing with goat’s milk…but he still prefers mama’s milk! I’ve learned a lot of great things from breastfeeding just through my experiences alone. I’m also happy to know that I’m saving the planet in some way by foregoing all the bottles and packaging that comes along with formula…etc.

All in all, my decision from day one was to breastfeed and I do not have any regrets. It is an emotional, spiritual, and physical journey that I will continue to take a day at a time. Breastfeeding may not be for every woman but I do believe that every woman ought to give it a chance. There are many issues surrounding it and there is support and plenty of literature to help you along the way! I’ve gone to La Leche League meetings and they’re very beneficial. I always walk away feeling so much better because a lot of the mom’s are dealing with the same issues - I don’t feel like I’m the only one struggling.

Some of my favorite breastfeeding books are:

The Nursing Mother’s Companion by Kathleen Huggins

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding- La Leche Leaque

Mama Knows Breast by Andi Silverman

and

I’m Made of Mama’s Milk by Mary Olsen

Breastfeeding is not picture perfect. I have plenty of moments and it get’s frustrating when my little guy wants to nurse frequently because he’s teething- or more recently, traveling in the car for 8 hrs. required that I get in the backseat and nurse my child while en route.  You make things work. I don’t recommend doing that but it helped maintain my sanity. I’m not one to be shy about nursing either- I’ll usually go with it and am always discreet. Speaking of discreet, while at the Green Baby Expo in Chico a few backs, I found out about a company called Belly Fish.

Belly Fish is a nursing pillow that allows you to feed your baby in privacy. It’s like the Bobby but 100x’s better! Think of it as a nursing bra- it has to covers on each side with straps. It was developed by two stay at home mom’s, in Chico, Ca. These mom’s wanted to create a product for nursing mom’s on the go! The Belly Fish nursing pillow folds down the center and comes with a tote bag for easy traveling.  I used it on the flight to Kauai, in the airport and while hanging at the beach. It has been a great investment so far. If, I’m in a place where I feel uncomfortable, I can use the Belly Fish and both baby and I are comfy. You’re not exposed in any way with the Belly Fish there is complete privacy. I purchased the Slate, Morning Glory design. It fit perfectly into our backpack and in our stroller. I keep it underneath the seats in the car for ready to have use. The Belly Fish nursing pillow is the way to go- I’d rather use it than any nursing cover. Check out Belly Fish today!

(wish it was a picture of me- but never had the chance to snap a shot!- Darn!)

Breastfeeding is a personal choice!  Happy World Breastfeeding Week!

Please feel free to share your breastfeeding experiences…

I love hearing from my readers!!! :)

Interview with Focoloco and a Giveaway~

August 6, 2008

*Attention- Giveaway at the end of this post!

What is Focoloco?
It’s a small line of infant/toddler basics. Family-run, produced in the US, and driven by my love of illustration and children.

How long has Focoloco been in business?

We’ve been in business since the Spring of 2004

How does Focoloco support the planet?
We use American Apparel garments and roganic ones for everything short sleeved. We use 100% post-consumer recycled papers in our printed materials and tags and recyclable mailers. We donate yearly to various charities and causes. We recycle and use mimimal packaging!!

Why is it important to cloth our wee one’s in organic?
To me, it’s not as much about the worry of organic fibers against our children’s skin.I mean, I do it for that reason because it is extra soft and lovely and I don’t have to worry about chemical residues on my kids, but the BIGGER picture is what’s important. It’s about the tons of chemicals that traditional cotton farming dumps into the soil and ground water. It’s also about the health of the workers handling the cotton and working the fields.

Why did your company choose organic?
We were always happy to be using American Apparel garments. They are a US company and support good labor practices, as well as, manufacturing models that encourage less waste, less energy consumption. When their organic line launched we adopted as many organic garment options as they had available. We love the natural cotton color, but many customers still love color, so we have the garments dyed at a local dyehouse with low impact dyes.

What is the motivation behind the style of Focoloco?
I have a degree in graphic design and a true love of the whimsical. It was an opportunity for me to create a business based on my artwork. Being the boss allows me a lot of flexibility to spend more time with my family.

What is your best selling item?
The Robots Love Dancing design is definitely the best seller. As for sizing it’s the 0-6m organic onesies.

My favorite design is the one featured below- RECYCLE. IT’S RAD!  Focoloco is doing their part to save the earth an is committed to minimizing their environmental impact! Another great eco company, that deserves a green thumbs up!!!

 * Would you like the opportunity to win this unisex design on an organic cotton tee? Of course you do!!!!  Leave me a comment, telling me your favorite design  at Focoloco  (besides the one featured) and make sure you leave an email address. Earn an extra entry for linking up or tweeting this giveaway. Giveaway ends August 13th- winner will be announced on the 14th! Giveaway is open to U.S. & Canadian residentsGood luck!  :)
